The Dangers of Sitting are REAL

For years, I've been lamenting the postural difficulties that come with sitting at a desk. Students, office workers, (even those who drive for long periods) subject themselves to a host of issues by simply sitting!

Bonnie Berkowitz and Patterson Clark did an incredible job of summing up what I have been telling my clients for so long! You can find there article here:

There are things we can do to protect ourselves, minimizing the damage done by prolonged sitting.

1) Make sure you are following the 90 Degree Rule: Always attempt to make sure every bent joint is at a 90 degree angle.

2) Take frequent breaks, get up move, stretch, go for a quick walk.

3) Drink plenty of water, hydrated tissues provide slightly better blood flow.

4) Consider using assistive devices, such as a box under your feet, whenever you aren't able to modify your employer-provided furniture.

5) Try using a yoga ball, with a base-stablizer instead of an office chair.

6) Balance out the long period of sitting with daily exercise and stretching like yoga.

7) Remember to get regular massage :) and don't forget to tell your Massage Therapist if you do have to sit for prolonged periods of time, so they can provide the affected muscles with a little TLC.
